YAO ART
ARTIST: YAO ZHIYAN
Born in Wuhan, I moved to Shenzhen.
For the past 34 years, I have painted between two worlds — the harsh rigidity of the city, and the inner solitude of the individual. Many people ask me what my paintings depict. My answer: I paint things that keep growing even after destruction.
This year, an Australian art institution watched my video works and traveled 8,000 kilometers to visit me in person. Her words standing before my paintings made me realize that decades of persistence have all been worthwhile.
From my early career, I have experimented with diverse artistic mediums and collaborated with artists, art museums and art organizations at home and abroad. For more than ten years, I have donated paintings to institutions across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and the United States. My works have been selected for numerous exhibitions in mainland China, Hong Kong, Germany and Australia.
Since 2006, I have been featured in interviews and in-depth special reports by art institutions and media from the United States, Canada, Indonesia and mainland China. I was included as an artist in Shenzhen Character Atlas in 2010, and selected to join the Chinese Artists Program in Australia in 2011.
My artworks are collected by private collectors, art museums and art institutions in Australia, Germany, the United States, France, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Yao Zhiyan’s oil paintings on canvas revolve around the subtle alienation between individuals and their inner selves, as well as between people. Filled with tangled, lonely and ambiguous emotions, his imagery constructs a self-contained yet boundlessly stretching spiritual realm, freezing fleeting fragments of life amid shifting light and shadow.
The artist favors blank backgrounds, translucent color blocks and mirrored reflections as visual vocabulary to dilute the inherent oppression and mystery of his works, much like mortal souls wandering mentally between light and dark. Distorted human figures with disproportionate bodies floating in undefined spaces depict the living conditions of urban dwellers. Through his paintings, he confronts humanity’s fragility and powerlessness, ultimately embarking on an inward journey of self-exploration and spiritual acceptance.
His painting practice is a process of deconstructing and dissolving figurative forms. Amid twisted, distorted figures, he captures transient spiritual imprints where body and soul drift apart on the stage of life. The scenes fixed on canvas preserve fragments of real life, yet also reveal an inner truth that transcends memory and personal experience...
